Module 1 - Research and Development


This module reviews basic heuristic principles related to the discovery and development of diagnostic and therapeutic biomedical products.

Learning objectives

After this module, you understand the scientific and technical aspects of the Research & Development process and are able to critically assess findings. Furthermore, you are able to apply strate-gic planning of scientific and economic aspects and risks management.

Learning content

  • Research & Development contains the introduction to translational medicine. It convers the processes in drugs, medical devices and diagnostics.
  • Drugs: drug discovery, bridging discovery and development, drug development Medical devices: design process, design quality, design realization, evaluation
  • Diagnostics: biomarker discovery and validation, clinical test development


Various experts from the industry, from Behring SA, Bayer Pharma AG, Johnson and Johnson to Venture, BioMed Partners and Cellestia Biotech, as well as academia with Artorg University of Bern and Inselspital.

The completion of this module takes approximately 10 weeks.

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Burger

Jürgen Burger is Professor of Translational Medicine and Entrepreneurship at the Medical Faculty of the University of Bern. He is also director of the Swiss School in Translation and Entrepreneurship in Medicine at sitem-insel AG. The focus of Jürgen Burger's research lies in bringing innovative treatment methods and therapeutic / diagnostic systems into clinical use. Special focus is on intelligent implants and surgical instruments in combination with pharmaceutical products.

Dr. Andreas Wallnoefer

Andreas trained as Clinical Pharmacologist and has degrees in Pharmaceutical Medicine and Business Management. After he joined F. Hoffmann- La Roche Discovery Research and Clinical Research, translational medicine became a key driver to implement the Personalized Healthcare strategy. Later, Andreas founded a Life Science Consulting company and advised management and boards of biotech companies on R&D strategy, drug development and organizational management. In 2016, Andreas joined in his role as General Partner BioMed Partners, a leading Swiss and European Venture Capital company.

Beat Lechmann

Beat Lechmann heads external innovation in R&D at DePuy Synthes companies of Johnson & Johnson. He is named inventor on 36 issued U.S. patents and investigator on 8 published scientific posters and publications. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Applied Science, Division Micro Mechanics and a Degree in Industrial Engineering. He is active member in various Advisory Boards and Program Committees.
