Bridging the gap in biomedical entrepreneurship: an insight into the TMBE program

In a dynamic interplay of science, entrepreneurship, and industry, the sitem-insel School's Translational Medicine and Biomedical Entrepreneurship program (TMBE) is bridging gaps and fostering innovation in translational medicine. But what really makes it special? Co-Directors Dina Marti and Mark Illi provide enlightening insights into the program.

The landscape of medical treatments has seen enormous growth thanks to scientific discoveries finding their way into clinical applications. Dina Marti, Co-Director at the sitem-insel School, explains that this translational process, moving from innovation to application, requires a strong level of collaboration between clinical applications, science, entrepreneurship, and business. «The goal of translational medicine is to bridge the gap between those different entities, and to bring the innovation to the patient in the best possible way.»

What makes the TMBE program special?

The Translational Medicine and Biomedical Entrepreneurship program (TMBE) at the sitem-insel School aims to provide professionals with the technical and strategic knowledge necessary to move their projects from conception to fruition. Mark Illi, Co-Director at the sitem-insel School, elucidates: The TMBE program equips professionals with the scientific-technical skills and the strategic-entrepreneurial knowledge in order to translate their projects from A to Z.

The program's special character lies in its structure and partnership. Marti describes the TMBE program as a unique and intense, two-year, part-time program that works towards dual goals. This opportunity, offered in collaboration with the University of Bern, allows personalized growth and development. «t pays into your personal development by obtaining a Master of Advanced Studies by the University of Bern. At the same time, you directly and specifically apply the knowledge acquired throughout the courses into your own personal project, explains Dina Marti.

Who is the TMBE program for?

The TMBE program is inclusive and caters to individuals from a broad range of backgrounds, as Dina Marti underscores: «Our students come from diverse backgrounds like medical doctors, natural scientists, engineers, and biomedical entrepreneurs. The one thing they share in common is their high passion and commitment for their project, and a remarkable scientific creativity.»

Through the TMBE program, participants gain essential tools and strategies to navigate the dynamic startup and biomedical entrepreneurship environment. According to Mark Illi, these skills «will help them to reach a mature state of their projects, in which they are able to bring their products into the market.»
